‘c’ initial letter sound in phonics

c (pronounced as heard in the word ‘cat’) is the phonics sound for the letter C. It is the same sound as heard in the letter K.

Soft and hard c

The c letter sounds is known as a hard c. 

c can sometimes make an alternative sound that is similar to the s letter sound. This is called a soft c and usually happens if the letter after the C is an E, I or Y. This can be heard in words such as centre, circle and cycle.
